Description

General Service Medal, GVI, bar Palestine, 3956529 Private J.C. Lewis, Duke of York’s Own East Yorkshire Regiment, earned as attached Sergeant to the REME

Officially impressed: “3956529 Pte J.C. Lewis. E. York. R.”

Confirmed on the medal roll.

An unusual medal, the East Yorkshire Regiment did take part in this campaign to earn the clasp, however meanwhile Lewis was attached as a Sergeant to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as an “Odd Man” from the regiment.

They note that he served in this capacity from 14th September 1936 until 16th November 1936, the whole of the regiment appear to have arrived in Palestine on 14th September 1936 and he was then attached.

The medal roll lists a number of attached men from a variety of regiments who earned the medal named to their parent unit but for service with the REME.

He appears to be the only man from the East Yorks who served in this capacity, other regiments noted with men on attachment were the 2nd Bn Cameronians, 1st Sherwood Foresters, Royal Welsh Fus, RA, RAOC, RASC, 11th Hussars, Duke of Wellington Regt.
