Marine Braithwaite would have served with either the 42 or 45 Commando, who were deployed to the Federation of Saudi Arabia between 1st August 1964 and 30th November 1967 in response to the Aden Emergency.

Following on from the “Radfan” clasp issued for 1964 another conflict broke out in the country.

The British had promised South Arabia would be free soon enough, to gain their independence as late as 1968, but this did not stop a number of rival nationalist groups from vying to gain control of the country in time for independence, and kick out the British, who had plans to remain there and maintain a Military Base still.

The British force responded in a bloody conflict, that cost 90 men killed in action and 510 wounded in fighting over 3 years.
