Description
Hasselt Cross or The Metal Cross 1830-31, bronze, Vrijwillig on obverse for Volunteer, variety very scarce. The Metal Cross was established by Royal Decree and instituted on September 12, 1831. It was awarded to Dutch military personnel who participated in the ten days’ campaign in Brussels in the same year and to all Dutch military and naval personnel who served in campaigns from 1830-1831. The awards were all manufactured from two cannons that were captured at Hasselt, and for this reason, the Cross is sometimes referred to as the Hasselt Cross.
