Description

India General Service 1895, VR, bar Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98, 4694 Pte Jeremiah Hourihan, Oxfordshire Light Infantry.

 

With copy service papers.

 

Jeremiah Hourihan was born in Dunmanway, Cork, Ireland, at the age of 18 he attested for service on 11th January 1894 in Kinsale, Ireland.

 

He joined the 1st Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry. On 30th June 1896 he deserted from his service and was caught 102 days later awaiting trial from 10th October 1896 to 20th October 1896, found guilty by District Court Martial of Absenting himself without leave and losing by neglect, subject to 42 days of imprisonment with hard labour.

 

Following his bout of hard labour he joined the 2nd Battalion and was posted overseas for service in India.

 

He served in India from 24th December 1896 until 10th February 1902, where he served with the Mohmand Field Force and Tirah Expeditionary Force.

 

By 26th November 1898 he was again awaiting trial by District Court Martial for:
1. Striking his superior officer, 2. Using threatening language. 3. Resisting an escort. 4. When a prisoner, escaping.
The hefty conviction that followed involved 8 months of hard labour and imprisonment.

 

He then was posted to South Africa for the end of the Boer War from 11th February 1902 until 18th October 1902.

 

He was discharged to the Army reserve on 19th October 1902.

 

He still managed to complete his 12 years term of engagement to be discharged on 10th January 1906.
