India General Service Medal 1895, bar Relief of Chitral, 2912 Driver Alfred Brown, East Lancashire Regiment. With copy service papers.

 

The medal is unusually named to the rank of Driver.

 

Alfred Brown was a local man from Burnley, Lancashire, having been a Groom when he enlisted with the East Lancashire Regiment on 26th June 1890 aged 23.

 

Military History:

 

At Home: 26th June 1890 – 20th February 1891
India: 21st February 1891 – 28th February 1896
Burmah: 29th February 1896 – 16th December 1897.
Home: 17th December 1897 – 12th January 1900.
South Africa (Boer War): 13th January 1900 – 13th April 1902
Home: 14th April 1902 – 5th August 1902.

 

Having been discharged to the Army Reserve following 8 years of service including the Chitral Relief Exedition, he was recalled for active service upon the outbreak of the Boer War on 18th December 1899.

 

Discharged again on 5th August 1902, having completed 12 years 41 days service.

 

He is additionally entitled to the Queen and King’s South Africa Medals for service during the Boer War.
