During World War 2, he saw service with the Royal Signals as part of the 1st Armoured Division.
He would claim the 1939-45 Star and War Medal, likely suggesting he took part in the fighting at Dunkirk in the early stages of the war in France during 1939-40.

As noted on his medal card, he was discharged 10th February 1942 under Kings Regs Para 360 XVI suggesting he was unfit for further service.
This would not however stop him from joining the Territorial Army, with whom he would earn the Coronation Medal 10 years later.
