According to the medal rolls and his medal index card, this medal alongside his BWM earned for service in India were issued to him during June 1940, it notes an attempt was made at issuing them back in 1923 but they were returned, having left the army earlier in 1920, only managing to issue them in 1940.
The reason he never got the medals is that according to his WW1 Pension Cards, he had gone off to Montreal in Canada some time after the war, but looks to have returned to London around the time of WW2 when he applied for the medals again.
As they were minted and named at this time the medal features a different claw, being the 2nd GVR type suspension mixed with a 1st Type effigy.
George Henry Lister was born during 1892.
He served in WW1 and then Afghanistan 1919 with the Royal Army Service Corps.
Due to his wartime service in India he only earned the BWM for this service, having entered India for war service from 6th May 1916.
Following the end of the war in Afghanistan he was discharged on 30th January 1920 Para 392 (XVIa) of King’s Regulations.
After his discharge he moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada and missed out on the issue of his medals, later claiming them again in 1940 when he returned home and lived at 71 Manchuria Road in Clapham Common, London.
He set sail right around the time of his discharge for a new life in Canada, he had been living in Cheetham, Manchester, working as a Motor Driver when he left from Liverpool Docks for St John, New Brunswick on the ship Melita dated 7th March 1920.
