India General Service Medal, 1908, EDVII, bar North West Frontier 1908, 27763 Bombardier Charles William Roberts, No 3 Mountain Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. 21 years long service since 1898.

 

Charles William Roberts first attested for service with the Royal Artillery on 10th May 1898.

 

He spent a long career with the Royal Garrison Artillery, which spanned 21 years in total, seeing extensive service overseas in India, Egypt and Salonica.

 

He saw the following overseas service, only a fraction of his service was spent at home in the UK:

 

Home, 10th May 1898 – 20th September 1899.
India, 21st September 1899 – 1st October 1909.
Home on Furlough, 2nd October 1909 – 1st April 1910.
India, 2nd April 1910 – 30th March 1911
Egypt, 31st March 1911 – 25th March 1914

 

WW1 Service:
India, 26th March 1914 – 19th September 1916
Salonica, 20th September 1916 – 8th January 1918.
Home British, 9th Jan 1918 – 13th December 1919.

 

Discharged following 21 years and 218 days service.

 

First promoted from Bombardier to Corporal on 4th August 1908, Promoted to Sergeant on 21st February 1912.
Posted and appointed to 143rd Heavy Battery RGA as Acting Battery Quarter Master Sergeant on 19th April 1917, confirmed in rank on 26th April.
Reduced to Sergeant on 27th August 1917 which he served as until his discharge.

 

Whilst overseas he managed to marry and raise a family, he married Hannah Rebekah White at Abbassia, Cairo on 26th September 1911, and had 2 children both born in Cairo, Egypt during 1912 and 1914.
