India General Service Medal 1854, bar Jowaki 1877-8, 517 Pte Thomas Foster, 51st 2nd Yorkshire West Riding Regiment of Foot.

 

Thomas Foster was born in Rotherham, Sheffield, Yorkshire.
He attested for service having been a File Cutter at the age of 22, stating that he had served with the 1st West Yorks Militia for 3 years and 44 days at Pontefract on 5th April 1876.

 

He saw the following service:

 

Home: 5th April 1876 – 10th Jany 1877
East Indies: 11th Jany 1877 – 15th May 1880
Home: 16th May 1880 – 4th Apr 1888.

 

Discharged on 4th April 1888 having completed his 12 years terms of service.

 

This medal is his sole entitlement for when he “Service in operations against Jowaki Afredis December 1877”.

 

Following his discharge he returned home to Rotherham, but appears to have died there during 1894.
