Description

India General Service Medal 1895, VR, bar Punjab Frontier 1897-98, 1503 Private Thomas Defley, 3rd Bn Rifle Brigade.

 

Official script engraved naming, suspension slightly slack, on old and long length of original silk ribbon.

 

Thomas Defley died during the campaign on 17th September 1897, and was buried in Miranshah, Bengal, India.

 

Thomas Defley, was born circa 1874 in Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire.

 

He first attested for service with the 4th Battalion Manchester Regiment of Militia on 3rd April 1901 when he was 17 years old.

 

A few months later he had turned 18, then on 4th September 1891 he attested for full time service with the Army, joining the Rifle Brigade at Manchester.

 

He served with the 2nd Battalion before being posted to the 3rd Battalion during 1893.

 

The Rifle Brigade Chronicle for 1897 lists him on their roll of Deaths, from September 1897 until the end of the year, the Rifle Brigade lost a man every few days.

 

At the time the Battalion was on service in the Tochi Valley.
