Description

India General Service 1895, 2 bars, 1914-15 Star Trio, Special Constabulary LSGC, GV, Sergeant Thomas W. Lambourne, Royal Sussex Regiment, a Sussex Local who was later a Special Constable.

 

Entitlement to IGS and both bars confirmed on the roll.

 

I.G.S. officially engraved in script: “4405 Pte T.W. Lambourne 2d Bn Ryl Suss Regt.” Some edge bruising and general wear.
1914-15 Star officially impressed: “853 Pte T. W. Lambourne. R. Suss. R.”
WW1 Pair officially impressed: “853 Sjt. T. W. Lambourne. R. Suss. R.”
Special Constabulary Medal officially impressed: “Thomas W. Lambourne.”

 

Thomas William Lambourne was born during July 1876, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Lambourne of Sussex.
He was baptised on 6th August 1876 in Durrington, Sussex.

 

Thomas first joined the Royal Sussex Regiment circa 1895, serving in India earning the 2 bars to his India General Service Medal, before being discharged to the reserves in 1901.

 

He re-enlisted for WW1 with the 3rd Reserve Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment.

 

He was posted to France landing on 31st August 1915 but according to the Sussex daily News, was invalided home after being wounded in action.

 

His time of arrival matches the date of the 9th (Service) Battalion which landed for service at Boulogne on 1st September 1915.

 

Likely no longer fit for combat, he later served on attachment to the Labour Corps.

 

Shown on the 1939 Census as a Chimney Sweep and Handyman living in Southwick.

 

He died in Worthing, Sussex, at the age of 71 during 1947.

The Special Constables entitled to medals and bars were from Shoreham, Southwick, Storrington, Lancing, Steyning and Hendfied and the majority of them were on parade, the complete list is as follows:-
