Thomas Langston was born in October 1868 in Westminster, London, he was first certified on 13th February 1891, from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England & Licensed Royal College Physician, London, he devoted his medical efforts to the Indian Medical Service.

 

Army and Navy Gazette 4th March 1893; “INDIA OFFICE, 3 March 1893.
The Queen has approved of the following Admissions to her Majesty’s Indian Medical Service:
To be Surgeon Lieutenants (Jan. 30)
Bengal: ….Thomas Alfred Ollivant Langston….”

 

The Story of the Malakand Field Force, Winston Churchill’s first book, extracted from the Despatch of Brigadier General Meiklejohn 26th July – 1st August 1897;

 

“Surgeon-Captain T.A.O. Langston, 38th Native Field Hospital, rendered valuable assistance in attending to the wounded under a heavy fire on the night of the 26th and each following night, and behaved with courage and devotion in carrying out his duties under very exceptional circumstances.”

 

Malakand was besieged from 26th July to 2nd August 1897, the British forces suffered 173 killed and wounded in the Malakand Camps.

 

Army & Navy Gazette 14th July 1902; Capt. T.A.O. Langston from 3rd Bengal Inf. to Medical Charge of 7th Bengal Lancers.

 

Army & Navy Gazette 5th March 1910; Capt. T.A.O. Langston Senior Medical Officer at Jacobabad, has been appointed to act civil surgeon in addition to his own duties.

 

He began WW1 as a Major, he had previously retired but took up his old commision almost immediately aged 46 with the Indian Medical Service and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel as of 25th December 1915, he earned the 1914 Star, British War Medal & Victory Medal.

 

His entry in the Roll of the Indian Medical Service;
“2343. Langston, Thomas Edward Ollivant. B. 1 Sept 1868. Bart’s M.R.C.S. 1891. L.R.C.P. Lond. 1891. S. Lt. 30 Jan. 1893. S. Capt. 30 Jan 1896. Major, 30 Jan 1905. R. 12 Dec. 1910. Rejoined for service in war of 1914-18, 6 Nov. 1914-1918. Lt. Col. 25 Dec 1915.
