Indian Mutiny, bar Central India, Gunner Josiah Smith, 2nd Company Bombay Volunteer Artillery.

 

Officially impressed: “Gunr Josh Smith, 2nd C. Bombay Reserve Arty.”

 

Provenance, Bought Baldwin 1967 & DNW December 2013.

 

Joseph Smith was a native of Wooford, Froome, Somerset, and enlisted at Cardiff on 29th June 1853 for 10 years service.

 

He embarked for India on 10th September 1853, on the Vernon, arriving on 31st December.
Posted to the 3rd Bombay European Regiment, he transferred to the Bombay Artillery and served with the 2nd Company of Reserve Artillery during the Indian Mutiny.

 

Medal Roll records he was present at Jhansi, Calpi and Gwalior. He did not elect to then join the Royal Artillery and was discharged with good character on 26th January 1860.
