Description

Indian Mutiny Medal, no bar, Gunner and Driver John Hollard, J Field Battery Royal Artillery, who was discharged as no longer fit in 1862 and died shortly afterwards from hardships of his service.

 

John Hollard was born during 1837 in Yeovil, Somerset, baptised on 12th July 1837.

 

On 21st May 1855 he attested for service with the Royal Artillery at Yeovil, where he stated he was 20 years old, when he in fact seemed to be a few months shy of 18.

 

He served a total of 6 years and 302 days, with 2 years and 5 months spent overseas, he spent 10 months in Constantinople (Istanbul) and 1 year 7 months in India.

 

On the 10th March 1862 he was officially discharged, he was found to be unfit for further service from a medical issue which had become apparent in 1861 at Woolwich.

 

Only a few months later he passed away. Sherborne Mercury, 30th September 1862:

 

“September, 27th, in Park Street, Yeovil, after a lingering illness, accelerated by hardships endured in the Indian Campaign, Mr John Hollard, aged 25 years.”
