Kabul to Kandahar Star, 1878 Lance Sergeant Edward Jones, 72nd Highlanders, The Duke of Albany’s Own Highlanders, or Seaforth Highlanders. Earned 3 bar Aghan and served in Egypt 1882.

Officially named on reverse: “1878 Lce Sergt E. Jones. 72nd. Highlanders.”

Edward Jones enlisted about 1869 for the 72nd Highlanders.

Shown as serving with the regiment on the 1871 Army Index, stationed in Umballa, India as a Private.

Served through the Afghanistan War, the medal roll recording entitlement to the medal with 3 clasps, for the Battle of Charasia, Kabul and Kandahar.

He took part in Lord Roberts’s Famous 300 Mile March from Kabul to Kandahar during August 1880 for which he earned this Bronze Star.

Upon arrival he took part with the regiment in the Battle of Kandahar on 1st September 1880, leading to the defeat of Ayub Khan, who had to bolt from his camp and was then chased by the Cavalry for a short while but got away to Herat.

He then went on to fight in the Egyptian War of 1882 with the 72nd, who had been recently reformed as the “Seaforth Highlanders”.

This earned him the Egypt Medal, dated 1882, and likely also the Khedive’s Star.

After all this he was pensioned out of the army due to his length of service.

1878 Sergeant Edward Jones of 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders had served for 19 years and 11 months, with about 11 years 8 months spent overseas in India.
