Fred Octavius Codd, from Grainthorpe, Lincolnshire was born on 20th Aug 1865, joined the Coldstream Guards on 26th January 1884 in London.

He served overseas in Egypt from 19th Feb 1885 to 11th September 1885.

After returning home he finished out his 12 year contract on 18th January 1896.

Frederick was one time promoted to Lance Corporal from 2nd May 1887 – 18th December 1887, before the festive season got the better of him, leading to a conviction by the Civil Powers for “Using obscene and profane language”, after that he returned to Private for the rest of his service.

Since he left the Army, returning home to Lincolnshire he had some success with the Boston Union, as noted in the Boston Independent on 12th October 1895:

“Mr Fred Octavius Codd, who has been Porter of the Boston Union for the last 4.5 years, has been successful in obtaining the advanced position and appointment in Brighton Union of Superintendent of the Labour Department, and that in a few days he will enter upon his new office.

Mr Codd not only carries with him the respect of the members of the board of guardians, but also that of the inhabitants of the town at large for his obliging and genial disposition to the inmates during the period he has been connected with Boston.”

He later moved to Yorkshire, and died there during 1941, being buried in Acklam in Cleveland Cemetery, Yorkshire.
