Khedive’s Sudan Medal, 2nd Type, 1917 onwards, unnamed as issued. Hussein Kamil Cypher.
The Khedive’s Sudan Medal, replaced the earlier version of the same title in 1910.
Being established in 1911, it was awarded for service in the Sudan to members of the Egyptian Army, as well as Sudanese Army.
There was a Silver Medal for Combatants and a matching Bronze for non-combatants.
This is the 2nd Type, the Arabic Cypher bearing the name of Hussein Kamel awarded for service circa 1917-1921.
In 1914 after the Ottoman Empire chose to join the “Central Powers” against Britain, Abbas II was removed by the British who ruled Egypt at the time in favour of his more pro-British uncle Hussein Kamel, naturally he was soon to be removed from the “1st Type” of the medal.
Hussein Kamel died 3 years later in 1917 leading to King Fuad I becoming the new Sultan and later King of Egypt and the Sudan, it is King Fuad’s name that appears on these circa 1917 issues of the 2nd Type medal.
