The Life Saving Medal (Medal of Tahlisiye) was instituted in 1859 and awarded to those who saved other people’s lives or for other similar heroic deeds, which included rescuing people from drowning, fires, earthquakes or landslides, while risking one’s own life.
Uniquely in Turkey this medal could be inherited but the heirs were not entitled to wear it.
