Description

Lloyd’s Medal for Meritorious Services, 1st Type in Bronze, 9 pointed Star shape, mounted for wear in fitted case of issue.

An excellent unworn example in fitted leather case, a good complete example with pin on ribbon as well.

This 1st Type of the award was created in 1893, to be awarded to those who by their own endeavours averted damage to, or loss of Vessels and their cargoes.

The Medal was at first only awarded in Bronze between 1893-1900, then from 1900-17 only in Silver.

This 1st Type was however not very popular and did not last long, whilst it is very attractive, there is no space to engrave a name on the front or the back, and choosing a star shape made it even more difficult to attempt to name the edge.

It was replaced by the Oval shaped 2nd Type which had a dedicated scroll on the reverse for naming.
