Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, VR, 1862 Pte William Hurdin, Royal Lancashire Regiment, A veteran of the Zulu campaign of 1879.

 

William Hurdin was born during 1854 in Frome, Somerset, enlisting with the 28th Gloucestershire Regiment of Foot on 24th December 1873, having been a member of the Somerset Militia.

 

His service at home and abroad:

 

Home 24th December 1873 – 23rd November 1875
Malta 24th November 1875 – 17th December 1875
Hong Kong 18th December 1875 – 4th January 1878
Straits Settlement 3rd January 1878 – 11th May 1879
Home 12th May 1879 – 28th May 1879
South Africa 29th May 1879 – 7th February 1880.
East Indies 8th February 1880 – 24th January 1895
Home 25th January 1895 – 12th February 1895.

 

His sole serious campaign was the Zulu War of 1879, where he earned the South African “Zulu” Medal and bar for the 1879 campaign.

 

He earned this medal in the Army Order of 1st April 1893 having transferred to the 2nd Battalion Royal Lancashire Regiment from 2nd February 1889 until his discharge during 1895.
