Military Cross, 1914-15 Star Trio, Captain Archibald Fraser, Queen’s Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry and 16th Battalion Highland Light Infantry, the City of Glasgow Regiment.

 

Captain Archibald Fraser was a young 6 foot 2 inch tall Scotsman from the City of Glasgow, having been a pre war member of the Glasgow Yeomanry he was mobilised as soon as the war began and arrived in France with A Squadron 1/1st Glasgow Yeomanry to act as Cavalry. In 1916 he returned home to be trained as an Officer and arrived back in France later as an Officer of a Glasgow battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, he was wounded in action twice on 30th May 1918, receiving a gun shot to his right forearm and also his chest.

 

Military Cross, contemporarily engraved to reverse: “Captain A. Fraser. 16th Battn H.L.I. 3rd June 1919”
1914-15 Star impressed: “2085 L-Cpl. A. Fraser. Q. O. R. Glasgow. Y.”
BWM and Victory impressed: “Capt A. Fraser”.

Archibald Fraser was born in Cathcart, City of Glasgow, Scotland.

 

As a 20 year old Shipping Clerk he first attested for service with the Queen’s Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry on 26th March 1913.

 

As soon as the war broke out, he was embodied for service with the regiment on 5th August 1914, being appointed as Lance Corporal on 19th September 1914.

 

He served originally in France with the QOR Glasgow Yeomanry from 31st August 1915 until 4th May 1916.
During this time the regiment served in France as Cavalry, he was part of A Squadron 1/1st Glasgow Yeomanry, who served with 24th Division in France as part of their Divisional Mounted Troops.

 

On 5th June 1916 he was selected to join 9 (Scottish) Officer Cadet battalion and sent home for training in Ayrshire.

 

On 26th September 1916 Cadet Fraser became 2nd Lieutenant on Probation. He was promoted to Acting Captain in July 1917.

 

He was with the 6th Battalion HLI at first then attached to the 9th Battalion, also later serving with 16th Battalion in command of B Company when he was wounded.
