Medal of Recompense (Household Medal) Christian IX 1st type Gold (31.5 gms) officially named in neat engraving to J. Blackburn (all of these 1st type were officially named on the edge, approx 202 awarded).

 

Officially engraved as issued from the Danish Royal Mint, the medal was awarded only about 202 times form 1865 until 1905.

 

John Blackburn was the beloved long serving House Steward to His Royal Highness Prince of Wales, future King Edward VII, and his wife, Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

 

A good story of the kinship between Blackburn and the Royal Family, who could not form authentic friendships due to their position but became close with their faithful servants, is shown when he was a young Sandringham Sergeant Footman and married Mary Wagland, the 2nd Nurse at Marlborough House, the Prince and Princess
