Mercantile Marine War Medal and British War Medal pair to Florence M. Durkin.

Florence Mary Durkin, was born Florence Mary Travers on 24th April 1872 in Southampton, Hampshire, being baptised on 30th June 1872. Her Father Jacob was 45 and her mother Elizabeth was 41.

When she was 21 years old she married Frederick Arthur Durkin (born 1870) during October 1893 in Southampton, who as of 1891 was a Ship’s Steward.

According to the Crew Lists of the National Maritime Museum, she served onboard first as 2nd Stewardess on S.S. Walmer Castle from 20th February 1915 until 14th April 1915, then as Stewardess on S.S. Gaika, from 29th May 1915 until 27th July 1915.
During this time S.S. Walmer Castle and Gaika were used to sail between Southampton and Cape Town, additionally carrying South African troops to German South West Africa

She died at the age of 84 in Southampton during January 1957
