Military General Service Medal, 1793-1814, 2 bars, Nive, Tolouse, Sergeant Thomas Evans, Royal Artillery Drivers.

 

On an old silk ribbon, some general wear during his later life and a small edge bruise.

 

Officially impressed: “Thos Evans, Serjt Arty Drivers.”

 

A unique clasp combination to the Royal Artillery, only 22 combinations of just Nive and Toulouse issued.

 

Provenance: Seaby 1970 and Dixon Autumn 2004.

 

Thomas Evans was born in Cheshire circa 1775 and first attested for service with the Army joining the Royal Artillery Corps of Drivers on 9th March 1795, having worked as a a Shoemaker.

 

He saw 10 years 145 days service as a Private, 7 years 300 days as a Corporal or Bombardier, with 1 year 153 Days as a Sergeant.

 

He was discharged following 19 years 237 days of service at the age of 39 years 237 days (possibly enlisted on his 20th Birthday) on the 31st October 1814.

 

Further research required on his service between 1795 and 1813 which could be very interesting.

 

He rounded out his career with service as a Sergeant in the Peninsular War, taking part in the Battle of Nive from 9th-13th December 1813 and the Battle of Toulouse on 10th April 1814.

 

Following such a long Army career he was suffering from Rheumatism and was discharged to his pension on 1st November 1814.

 

By the time of the issue of this medal circa 1848 he have been about 73 years old.
