Military General Service Medal 1798-1848, 2 bars, Sahagun and Benevente, Corunna, William Strachan, Trumpeter, Royal Horse Artillery.

 

Only 8 recipients of the Sahagun Benevente bar to R.H.A. With 379 bars in total awarded to the Cavalry Units involved in the actions.

 

Officially impressed: “W. Strachan, Trumpr R.H. Arty.”

 

William Strachan was born in East Cannygate, Midlothian, Scotland, working as a Chair Maker when he enlisted for service with the Royal Horse Artillery on 28th July 1804.

 

He first served as a Gunner for 5 years 286 days before being appointed as Trumpeter for 4 years 74 days, until his eventual discharge on 23rd July 1814.

 

Served in the Corunna Campaign, and at the cavalry actions of Sahagun on 21st December 1808 and Benevente on 29th December 1808, during which only 2 companies of the Royal Horse Artillery were present, leading to only 8 issues of the bar from survivors by 1848.
