Description

Military Medal, GV, 32123 Private Christopher Charles Thomas, 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, taken prisoner on 27th May 1918 at Champagne, awarded MM during his time imprisoned and freed in 1919.

 

Officially impressed: “32132 Pte C. Thomas. 2/S. Lan: R” Some pitting through wear from along side his 1914 Star.

 

Taken prisoner on 27th May 1918, during the the first day of the Third Battle of the Aisne, the beginning of the Offensive in Champagne. Also known as the Battle of the Chemin des Dames.

 

He is noted on the German POW Records as having received a gunshot to the chest and knee, and in the foot and back.
In German: “Schuss 1. Brust r Knie, 1. Fuss und Rucken”

 

He was taken and held in the Old Fortress at Rasttatt Prisoner of War Camp in Baden.

 

Whilst in captivity, the award of his Military Medal would be announced in the London Gazette of 25th June 1918.

 

Shown as a released Prisoner of War from Germany, arriving home in England in the War Office Daily List 5772 15th January 1919.

 

He had first entered into the war as 9334, Private in the 3rd Dragoon Guards, arriving in France on 15th September 1914, earning him the 1914 Star Trio.

 

Christopher Charles Thomas was born on 19th June 1894 in Brighton, and died there during 1944.
