Militia Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, EDVII, 4146 Gunner Matthew Larkin, Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Edinburgh Royal Garrison Artillery. 

 

Officially impressed: “4146 Gnr: M. Larkin. D.E.O.E.R.G.A.”

 

Awarded in Army Order 7, during August 1909.

 

This scarce medal was only awarded 1587 during its lifetime, with 27 awards going to the Edinburgh Royal Garrison Artillery Militia.

 

With copy service papers.

 

Matthew Larkin was born in Edinburgh, Scotland circa 1869.

 

He first enlisted into the D.E.O. Edinburgh R.G. Artillery Militia at the age of 22, whilst he worked as a Fireman on 28th March 1891.

 

He continued to re-engage every 5 years for further service until his discharge on 27th March 1905, his character being described as “Exemplary”.

 

He would then re-enlist again on 28th May 1905, now 36 years old.

At this time he was working as a Hawker in Leith, Midlothian.

 

Finishing out his service with the D.E.O.E.R.G.A. Militia he earned this medal during 1909 marking his 18th Year in the Militia.
