Military Medal impressed: “311323 Sjt: J. McGarrell. 1/1 N. BN: BDE: R.G.A.”
WW1 pair both impressed: “311323 Sjt. J. McGarrell. R.A.”

 

Awarded the Military Medal, London Gazette, 29th August 1918.
Earned the Bar to the M.M., London Gazette, 13th March 1919.

 

John McGarrell was born during 1892 in Middlesborough, Yorkshire, the son of Irish parents S and E. McGarrell, who had come over to Middlesborough to work as a Blast Furnace man.

 

John also worked as a Blast Furnace man once he became of age.
He later became the Blast Furnace Keeper.

 

Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 4th April 1934:

 

“Mr John McGarrell, of Acton Street, Middlesborough, a former Chairman of the House Committee of the North Riding Infirmary, was admitted to the Infirmary yesterday. He received burns about the feet while following his employment as a Blast-Furnace Keeper.”
