Jan Niemiec was a Porucznik, a Polish Lieutenant as part of the Polish Armed Forces who saw extensive service in Italy. He was an Officer of the 2 Kompania Warstatowa, of the 3 Dywizja Strzelców Karpackich. The unit was formed in 1942 as part of the Polish Independent Carpathian Brigade, the division had before Italy served in North Africa during 1942. Notably they fought in the Italian Campaign of 1943-44 where the division distinguished themselves for their services during the Battle of Monte Cassino as well as the Dash for Ancona and Bologna.
