Natal Medal, bar 1906, Lt V.J. Neilson, Durban Light Infantry, officially script engraved naming

 

Victor John Neilson was born in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland during 1878.

 

He enlisted for service with the Scottish Rifles, as a 23 year old Engineer, having apprenticed for 3 years and been a member of the 1st L.R. Volunteers on 31st January 1901.

 

Only 12 days later he rose from Private to Sergeant on 11th February 1901, being posted to South Africa with 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles on 15th March 1901.

 

Following the end of his term of engagement he was discharged as Sergt on 31st August 1902.

 

He took his discharge and chose to remain in South Africa.

 

Later shown as joining the United Grand Lodge of England Freemasons on 19th December 1913 at Piet Ratief, Transvaal.

He later was noted as died in the Scotland National Probate Index of 1931:

 

“Neilson, Victor John, sometime of 78 Buccleuch Street, Glasgow, latterly of Buona Vista, Rossburgh Natal, South Africa, died 5 December 1930 at Rossburgh, aforesaid, intestate. Confirmation Edinburgh, 7 May, to Annie Bell Neilson, Kelvinside House, Beaconsfield Road, Glasgow, his sister, net of kin. Value of Estate, £277:16:10.”
