He was born in Exeter, Devon during 1805. Aged 15 he joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 3rd Class on HMS Atalante.
He saw service on a number of ships, including HMS Alfred which he was present on at the capture of the island of Guadaloupe on 05/02/1810 as well as HMS Mutine during the action off Algiers on 27/08/1816.
He was discharged from the service on 25/10/1816.
