Naval Good Shooting Medal, GV, 194423 W.C. Austen, A.B., D.S.M., HMS Implacable, 1911 6 IN B.L.

 

William Charles Austen was born on 7th February 1882 in Chatham, Kent.

 

He joined the navy as a Boy 2nd Class on HMS St Vincent on 5th July 1897 aged only 15.

 

He saw much sea service on various ships between 1897 and WW1, he was onboard HMS Implacable from 2nd February 1909 to 22nd October 1910 and from 12th January 1911 until 13th January 1912.
At which time he earned the rare Good Shooting Medal.

 

During WW1 he began on HMS Intrepid, from 21st September 1912 until 7th March 1915.
then HMS Orvieto from 8th March 1915 until 24th May 1916.
Serving the remainder of the war onboard HMS Wahine from 22nd July 1916 until 21st September 1919.

 

During the war he was mentioned in despatches on 3rd August 1917 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal on 25th October 1916 for Dover Patrol Duties.

 

After the war he saw the rest of his service on shore at HMS Pembroke I & II before being discharged to his shore pension on 6th February 1922.
