Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, GV, Armourers Mate Herbert Jones, HMS Colleen, the Irish Naval Base, earned in 1916, served 22 years in the Navy. 

 

Officially impressed: “296966 Herbert Jones, Arm Mte, H.M.S. Colleen”.

 

Awarded on 24th March 1916, whilst stationed in Ireland at HMS Colleen.

 

With copy service papers.

 

For his WW1 service he is entitled to the 1914-15 Star Trio, delivered to him after the war on HMS Mutine.

 

Herbert Jones was born on 9th May 1878 in Bath, Somerset.

Having worked as a Blacksmith, he signed on with the Royal Navy on 4th March 1901, as Stoker 2nd Class.

That next year whilst stationed on HMS Cambridge he became “Armourers Crew” on 26th February 1902, and would remain in the Armourer Department for the rest of his career.

 

Following services on various ships he rose to Armourer’s Mate on 1st August 1911, whilst serving on the Cambrian from 1909-1911.

 

He would continue on as Armourer’s Mate until his discharge in 1923.

 

His WW1 period service:

 

“HMS Argyll, 23rd June 1913 – 16th October 1915

HMS Vivid I, 17t October 1915 – 29th November 1915

HMS Camelia, 30th November 1915 – 18th December 1915

HMS Colleen (Camelia), 19th December 1915 – 4th August 1916

HMS Colleen, 5th August 1916 – 17th May 1919.

 

Continuing on after the war to finish out his service he remained until 3rd March 1923, when he was finally shore pensioned following 22 years of flawless service.
