Description

Ashantee Medal, Egypt Medal, dated 1882, Khedive’s Star, dated 1882, 2nd Captain of the Forecastle, William Brimacombe Spry, Royal Navy, HMS Encounter and HMS Agincourt.

 

Well preserved toned condition, with only minor pitting from star to Egypt medal.

Wiliam Brimacombe Spry was born on 28th March 1850 in Plympton, Devon.

 

At the age of 18 he first joined the Royal Navy as an A.B. on 28th March 1868. Register Number 55037.

 

His ship service during the Ashantee War Period:

 

HMS Excellent, 1st Jan 1873 – 21st August 1873
HMS Encounter 22nd August 1873 – 1st January 1874
HMS Simoon 2nd Jan 1874 – 24th February 1874
HMS Duke of Wellington 25th February 1874 – 28th February 1874
HMS Cambridge 7th March 1873 – 25th March 1875.

 

Service during Egypt War period:

 

HMS Cambridge, 1st December 1881 – 26th May 1882
HMS Agincourt, 27th May 1882 – 1st August 1884, during this time promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class and Captain of the Forecastle.

 

Promoted Leading Seaman, 1st February 1876 (HMS Valorous), Petty Officer 2nd Class, 11th September 1877 (HMS Valorous), Leading Seaman, HMS Decoy, 25th February 1879, Petty Officer 2nd Class (HMS Decoy), Petty Officer 1st Class, 1st July 1883 (HMS Agincourt), Captain of the Forecastle, 1st August 1884.

 

Shore Pensioned after long service from HMS Defiance during 1891, shown on his papers as still returning yearly for his drills as a Reservist until 1905.

 

He later died in Plymouth, Devon during 1928,
