New Zealand War Medal, undated reverse, 3335 Corporal George Tyler, 50th Queen’s Own Regiment. A Crimea veteran who spent 5 1/2 years in the ‘Australian Colonies’.
Naming officially impressed as issued, He is additionally entitled to the Crimean War Medal with bar Sebastopol and the Turkish Crimea Medal, the medal roll does not indicate they were specially issued as named so it is presumed they were issued unnamed during the War.
George Tyler was born in Hartlebury, Worcester during 1831. He attested for service with the 50th Regiment on 16th August 1848 aged 17 years old.
His conduct was described as “Conduct has been Good and he is in possession of four good conduct badges – The Crimea Medal, Turkish and New Zealand Medal were conferred upon him.”
He was discharged having completed his second term of engagement having served for over 21 years, on 16th June 1870.
He had spent 13 years and 7 months overseas on service, 2 Years in Turkey and Crimea, 6 Years in Ceylon and 5 years 7 months in the “Australian Colonies”.
Following the Crimean War the regiment was sent to Ceylon for Garrison Service before being deployed to New Zealand for the Second Maori War of 1863-66, after which they went on to serve in Australia only returning to England during 1869.
