Naval General Service Medal, bar Navarino, William Butt, Private, Royal Marines, HMS Philomel, later Corporal with 57th Company.

 

A unique name on the medal roll. With comprehensive research & copy RM service papers.

 

Ex Glendinings September 1987 (£230).

 

William Butt was born in Ingateston, near Brentwood in Essex during 1802, the son of John and Mary, being baptised on 12th June 1803. He enlisted for service with the Royal Marines at the age of 18 at Chelmsford on 4th December 1820.

 

Served as a Private from 4th December 1820 – 1st October 1832
Corporal from 2nd October 1832 – 23rd December 1842.

 

Spent 2 years 4 months 11 days on HMS Bermuda & Antelope. 28th July 1826 to 20th August 1831, 5 years & 24 days onboard HMS Philomel & Britannia including the action at Navarino.

Spent 9 years, 9 months & 29 days a float and on Foreign Stations, with 12 years 2 months 21 days on Shore.

 

Served 22 years & 20 days total before being discharged on 23rd December 1842 at Portsmouth.

 

Remarks on his service: “He produces several Certificates of excellent character form various officers under whom he has served, He also served at Navarino.”

Given his long service & excellent conduct including extensive time at sea he is possibly a recipient of the rare ‘Anchor’ Naval Long Service & Good Conduct Medal?
