John Livingstone was born on 6th April 1887 in Belfast, Antrim. He was a Machine Boy before joining the Royal naval on 26th August 1902 as a Boy 2nd Class aged 15 on the Black Prince.

 

He served on HMS Fox from 6th June 1910 until 27th August 1912 when he took part in the Persian Gulf campaign.
He served continuously through to WW1 being on HMS Collingwood since 24th January 1914 when the war broke out.

 

During the war he transferred to HMS Vanguard from 27th July 1915 until 1st May 1917, followed by Vivid I 27th May 1917 until 25th September 1917.
HMS Highflyer 31st October 1917 until 6th February 1919. He was discharged on 9th February 1920.

 

During July 1906 he was sentenced by a Court Martial to 9 months of hard labour for striking a superior officer whilst on HMS Duke of Edinburgh, he did not return to sea until March 1907.
