WW2 medals officially impressed: “VX117143 F.G. Gibbins.”

Frederick George Gibbins was born in Wigan, United Kingdom on 23rd December 1904, he was 7 years old when his family emigrated to Australia to work on the farms embarking S.S. Indrapura for Melbourne on 30th September 1912.

 

He first enlisted in the Part time Militia as Sergeant on 18th January 1926 with 4th Division Signals, he was working as a Fitter and Turner with Victorian Railways.

 

On 8th February 1927 he was commissioned as Lieutenant.
During WW2 he enlisted in the Australian Military Forces at Caulfield on 13th August 1942 and was posted to 7th Air Support Control as Captain.
He officially enlisted with the A.M.F. in Parramatta on 26th August 1942 and thus volunteered to serve anywhere overseas.
He did his promotion course from 8th January to 7th February 1943.
On 23rd September 1943 he was posted to 3rd Corps Signals.
Then posted to Army Headquarters Melbourne with Engineers Equipment Section for duty in the manufacture of Army small craft on 22nd November 1943.
Posted to Headquarters Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at Victoria on 2nd May 1944.

 

Embarked at Brisbane for operations ‘New Britain’ in the Pacific against the Japanese on Transport “Katoomba” on 19th February 1945.
He disembarked back at Brisbane from Jacquinot Bay on Transport Ormiston, 26th July 1945.
He was posted to Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Headquarters Darwin, 4th October 1945.
Following the end of the war he was discharged at Melbourne on 14th November 1946 and later served part time duty at 3rd Base Workshops, Broadmeadows.

 

He was awarded this Effieincy Decoration on 15th November 1946.
Awarded the Pacific Star, War Medal & Australian Service Medal during 1957, sent to Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Training Depot, Somerville Road, Yarraville, Victoria.

 

As well as his Military Duties he was also an organiser for the Military Ball Committee since the 1930’s becoming the President in the 50s.
