During the visit Mahatma Gandhi led the “Prince of Wales Riots” against the British.
Edward, the Prince of Wales came to British India for a Royal Visit during late 1921, the visit was not welcomed by most of the country who were in the middle of the “Non-Cooperation Movement” protests led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress.
Rather than visiting streets filled with supporters, Bombay was quiet as supporters stayed home and closed their businesses, with only crowds of Parsis, Jews and Anglo-Indians turning out to support the Prince.
Much to the horror of Gandhi, what was meant to be a peaceful protest turned violent as a mob began rioting in the streets and attacking the other side, shouting “Mahatma Gandhi ki jai”, Hindi for “Glory to Mahatma Gandhi”, in response to the violence which was the opposite of what he wanted, Gandhi began a hunger strike, vowing not to eat or drink until peace was restored. As a result thousands of Indians were imprisoned and 58 people were killed.
