Punjab Medal 1848-9, 2 bars, Goojerat, Chilianwala, Joseph Allcock, 9th Lancers. Died during the war on 6th October 1849.

 

Officially impressed: “J. Allcock, 9th Lancers.” Some edge bruising.

 

Medal and Clasps confirmed on the Punjab Casualty Roll: 1584 Private Joseph Allcock, earned the medal with 2 clasps, for Chilianwala and Goojerat, before he died on service on 6/10/49.

 

Possibly the most famous cavalry unit of the British Army to fight in India during this period, who saw significant service in India in the 1840-50s, riding at Punniar (1843), Sutlej War (1845), the Punjab War (1848-9), and Indian Mutiny.

 

The book “The Life of a Lancer in the Wars of the Punjab, 7 Years in India 1843-50” by ex Trooper James Gilling, 9th Lancers, provides a first hand account of being a Trooper in the campaign.
