Description
Punjab 1849, 2 Bars, Lieut later Capt William Hutchinson, 1st Bn 60th Royal Rifles. Excellent extensive battle services during the Second Anglo Sikh War of 1848-9.
Officially impressed: “Lieut W. Hutchinson. 1st Bn 60th R. Rifles.”
Excellent preserved condition for it’s age, only very slight signs of wear.
Appears to be his only medal entitlement, having seemingly retired just before the Indian Mutiny.
His services from the Army List of 1856:
Captain Hutchinson served the Punjab Campaign of 1849 (Medal and Clasps), and was present during the Second Siege Operations at Mooltan (Including the siege and storm of the Town and Capture of the Citadel).
Battle of Goojerat, pursuit of the Sikh Army until its final surrender at Rawal Pindee.
Occupation of Attock and Peshawur, and expulsion of the Afghan Force beyond the Khyber Pass.
William Hutchinson, whose father was also named William Hutchinson, was first Commissioned as an Ensign with the 60th King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 8th April 1842.
Promoted to Lieutenant on 26th April 1844
Promoted to Captain on 15th March 1853.
Later known as the K.R.R.C. or King’s Royal Rifles Corps.
Notice of Marriage in the Military Gazette, 18th June 1864:
“Hutchinson – Brunjes, June 11, at St Lawrence Church, Thanet, Kent, by Rev G.W. Sicklemore, William Hutchinson, Esq, of Ramsgate, Late Captain of 60th Royal Rifles, to Rebecca, the only daughter of M Brujes, Esq, West Dumpton, Isle of Thanet.”
Martin Brunjes was a German Born Foreman in the Sugar House in London.
However barely a month after his marriage, she appears to have died in Thanet in July 1864.
He is shown on the 1881 Census as a Retired Army captain, born in Ireland during 1824.
Living at 43 Shirley park, Millbrook, Hampshire with his wife Ann.
Appears to also be on the 1861 Census living at Winters House, Starvenden, Tilehurst, Sussex.
A Retired Army Captain aged 32 (should be about 37), born in Ireland.
Living with his Mother Mary Hutcinhson a “Widow of Captain Royal” Born 1805 in Winchester, Yorkshire.
And his Aunt, Ann Ruddell, a Daughter of a Captain in the Army.
