Samuel John Lean was born on 25th December 1862 in Devonport.

 

Ranks throughout service: Shipwright 17th October 1889, Leading Shipwright 1st October 1896, Carpenters Mate 1st October 1897, Chief Carpenters Mate 1st January 1910, Chief Shipwright 2nd August 1914

 

He entered into the Navy on 17th October 1889 as a Shipwright on HMS Indus.
Service during the Boer War: HMS Pelorus 1st July 1899 – 28th June 1901.
HMS Vivid 2 29th June 1901 – 16th December 1901
HMS Pearl 17th December 1901 – 29th November 1904.

HMS Amphitrite, 2nd August 1914-19th May 1915
HMS Vivid II 20th May 1915 – 7th June 1915, when he was invalided out of service.
