Queen’s South Africa, no bar, 5670 Private H. Legerton, 1st Bn Essex Regiment.
Officially impressed: “5670 Pte H. Legerton 1: Essex Regt”
Contact marks, wear and cleaned. Note the medal was likely a disc at some time and has been fitted with a replacement BWM suspension.
Also the naming is correct but the roll has the number of “5671” so a very slight error.
Confirmed on the medal roll, entitled to the Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal Clasps as well as the matching King’s South Africa Medal with both clasps.
With copy Militia Papers, having been attached from the 3rd Militia Battalion to the 1st Battalion to serve in the War.
Harry Legerton was born in Dunmow Essex.
Signed up with the Militia aged 17 with number 5203 joining the 3rd Bn Essex Regt.
His papers recall he was “Appointed to the 1/Essex Regt under Section 14(2) Reserve Forces Act on being called up for permanent duty with the Regular Forces, 29. 12. 1899”
“1/Essex Proceeded to South Africa for Active Service, Embarked on SS Orient 29th Dec 1899.”
Disembodied on return home, 29th August 1902, discharged on that day with time expired.
