Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2 bars, Johannesburg, South Africa 1901, 3904 Private Francis Arthurton, 16th Lancers, attached to 21st Lancers, who served in the war as an Officer’s Servant.
1901 bar loose on ribbon, with a nice old piece of silk.
An unusual bar entitlement from his attached service, medal named to the 16th Lancers.
Francis Arthurton was born about 1872 in St Saviour Southwark, London.
By the 1891 Census he was working as a Draughtsman, before attesting for service with the 16th Lancers on 9th October 1894.
He served at home from 9th October 1894 until 9th September 1895.
Served in India from 10th September 1895 until 21st January 1900.
Then in South Africa from 22nd January 1900 until 10th December 1900. But crossed off on his papers is the departure date of 25th April 1901, so as he is entitled to the SA 1901 bar on the medal roll he must have been there a few months into 1901.
Finished off service at home from 11th December 1900 until 25th April 1901.
His service entries are signed by possibly “H. Walter” who was Captain and Adjutant of the 21st Lancers during the war. This is likely who he was officer’s servant to.
He had been discharged having been found medically unfit for further service under Para 1805 XVI Kings Regulations on 25th April 1901.
His conduct was shown as “Very Good in 21st Lancers”, his special qualifications for employment in civil life reads:
“Good Officers Servant.”
