Description

Queen’s South Africa, no bar, 2855 Pte Alfred Taylor, 2nd Battalion The Buffs, East Kent Regiment. later issued 2 bars, Paardeberg, Relief of Kimberley.

Officially impressed: “2855 Pte A. Taylor. E. Kent Regt”

Neat official correction to “Pte A.”

Confirmed on the medal roll, which notes the medal was issued at first without clasps, being an earlier “Ghost Dated” example, but he was later issued via an addendum in April 1905 with 2 loose clasps for “Paardeberg” and “Relief of Kimberley”.

A lot of the battalion had earned these clasps during their service it looks like he was initially left out and appealed later, however he never seems to have bothered to have them attached to the medal as he had since left the Army 3 years earlier.

Alfred Taylor was born on Chatham, Kent circa 1871.

As an 18 year old working as a Boatman, he enlisted for service in the East Kents at Canterbury on 17th April 1889, having seen previous service in the “Thames and Medway S.M.M.M. R.E.” aka the Thames and Medway Division of Militia Submarine Miners, Royal Engineers.

Alfred was deployed to South Africa between 22nd December 1899 until 18th July 1900.

On 15th April 1902 he was discharged on completion of 13 years of service.
