Description

Queen’s South Africa Medal, 3 bars, Cape Colony, Driefontein, Diamond Hill, 5566 Pte John Terry, 1st Battalion The Welsh Regiment. Also known as the Welch Regiment.

 

Officially impressed: “5566 Pte J. Terry, Welsh Regt”, some edge bruising.

 

Entitlement confirmed on the medal roll, also earned the King’s South Africa Medal with the usual 2 bars.

 

John Terry was born circa 1879 in All Saints, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

 

It seems due to his close proximity to Wales, he crossed over to Pontypridd to find work.

 

Attested for service at Pontypridd aged 19 for the Welsh Regiment on 20th April 1898, having been working as a Labourer.

 

Posted to South Africa with 1st Bn Welsh Regt on 16th January 1899.

 

Served throughout the war until 7th March 1902.

 

He was then transferred to 2nd Battalion and joined them going to India, from 8th March 1902.

 

Invalided out of the army as no longer fit at Quetta, India on 10th February 1904, being sent home on a ship, intending to return back to Cheltenham.

 

Being officially discharged on his arrival back on 17th May 1904.
