Officially impressed: “40923 Tpr J. Johnstone 2nd Scot: Horse.”

James Johnstone, also referred to as Johnston, was from Scotland and served with both the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Scottish Horse, being the Shoeing Smith for a time.

He was discharged at Aldershot on 3rd September 1902.

According to the Medal Roll, the medal was originally issued with the Transvaal and SA 1902 bars, with the Cape Colony and Orange Free State arriving with him later to be added to the medal, which explains the order they are mounted in.
