Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2 bars, Cape Colony, SA 1902, 7023 Private William Butterfield, 4th Durham Light Infantry. Local man from Gateshead volunteered at 19 in 1901.

 

Officially impressed: “7023 Pte W. Butterfield Durham L.I.”

 

William Butterfield, born in St Marys, Gateshead, Durham, during 1883.

 

As soon as he turned 18, he joined the war effort.

 

Attested for service on 31st May 1901 aged 18 with the 4th Bn Durham Light Infantry Militia.

 

Posted for operational service in South Africa from 1st February 1902.
Disembodied after the war on 3rd October 1902.

 

Continued on with the Militia until Time Expired on 30th May 1907.
