Description

Queen’s South Africa Medal, 5 bars, Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, 6392 Private W. Cook, 3rd Bn Grenadier Guards.

Confirmed on the roll as having received the medal with these 5 bars.

Having fought in the early battles of the war with the Guards Brigade who arrived very early into the war in late 1899, he had seen significant war service in less than a year, he had narrowly missed earning his 6th “Battle bar” with his comrades as typically seen on these medals for the Battle of Belfast (Bergendal) in late August 1900, as he was likely in the hospital.

He died on 28th September 1900 of Enteric Fever and was buried on the same day in Pretoria.
