Description
Queen’s South Africa, 5 bars, CC OFS TVL SA 1901 SA 1902, 307 Corporal J. Farrow, South African Constabulary.
Officially impressed: “307 Corpl: J. Farrow. S.A.C.”
Confirmed on the medal roll.
Corporal Farrow served with A Division, South African Constabulary.
The roll entry for his date clasps notes “2816, No service in S.A. with 20th Hussars.”
John Farrow was born in Freshwater, Newport, Hampshire circa 1869.
Before he joined the South African Constabulary he had served as Number 2816 in the 20th Hussars.
He joined the 20th Hussars on 16th Nov 1887 aged 18.
His records note that upon discharge back in November 1894 that he was “Steady, sober and honest, has been a rough rider for 4 years.”
He officially left the Army Reserve with the rank of Corporal on 14th November 1899, so was not amongst those emergency recalled for the war.
However instead of sitting idle at home he looks to have joined up with the SAC during the war, no doubt he would not have struggled with the usual Riding and Shooting tests that they undertook.
His previous service as Corporal in the 20th Hussars means it likely did not take long for him to regain his old rank in the SAC.
